Follows the events of DETONATION and PROLIFERATION

The Essentialist—Spoke war continues in the east, while in the northwest an escalation of arms can only lead to more conflict. The fate of the continent depends on the endeavors of Pyke, a cursed advocate for foreign dignitaries in game show-governed Aspen, and Cecile, a long-time Spoke supporter from Quebec City who has been living with a dark secret. Their journeys weave through the lives of Owen, Warrick, Lexie and Tarnation. New nation-states in the midwest become embroiled in the struggle. And they will face new technological perils, including a hidden machine intelligence that could tilt the balance of power against humanity.

Vibrant, mysterious and magical . . . a thoughtful science fiction epic that touches on morality and the human drive to survive at all costs

On colonial Venus, people who are susceptible to lies have been denigrated and barred from the citizenry. Ancient dirigibles dock at the top of colossal towers to shunt people to and from underground cities. Armies of enclosed, beetle-shaped biocrawlers creep around the planet providing a coveted, yet deficient, natural environment. Colonists strive for an outdoor ecology to call their own, but terraforming is faltering.

There is growing unrest, and at the heart of this rift is Hix, a member of the Venusian underclass. He has risen from the tenements to become a renowned film star, until he is accused of murder. Neeva is destined to be Keeper, an esteemed protector of First Colony Heritage. She is also an inspector assigned to Hix’s case... and the victim happens to be her sister.

Hix and Neeva must find passage through the winds of change, or their people will be swept away forever.

Urgent themes of classism and discrimination beat at the heart of this action-laced sci-fi thriller.

Sci-fi fans interested in dystopian worlds, corrupt governments, and the future of our solar system will relish in this.

The labyrinthian plot is engaging, the characters well-developed, and the world-building excellent.

Population centers have been leveled and society has regressed to a pre-industrialized state. The advanced city of Haplopol rises from the ashes, enabling the rebirth of more such cities, each one subtly different, the result of an experiment in finding the best machine-governed utopia. Sovereign forces mobilize to exploit their power, and others, to contain them. At the heart of this is an unlikely pair; a dejected anthropologist whose life’s work has finally become useful, and a snarky pirate forced to serve a monastic cult. To survive, they must not only navigate escalating conflict, but also understand the implications of the rising machine cities for all of humanity.

*** NAMED TO KIRKUS REVIEWS BEST BOOKS OF 2018 ***

Fire, splitting the atom, synthetic biology. There's a dark side to every invention, one which we have been fortunate to contain for most of history. But are we hurtling forward too fast?

Detonation is an epic dystopian tale that is a cautionary reflection on our own innovation-obsessed culture. It follows two societies that are connected, but centuries apart, and their struggle against a superintelligent machine. Amid ideological clashes and political plotting, a diverse cast discovers this insidious threat, one which few can fathom, and fewer can challenge.

Detonation also received an Honorable Mention for the Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award for Science Fiction

“A highly entertaining and absorbing combination of philosophy and action featuring robustly individualized characters.”
“…a future world that vibrates with conflict and ideas.”
“Otto’s reflections on hubris and warnings about artificial intelligence have a chilling plausibility.”

* NEWLY REVISED IN 2020 *

AN ACTION-PACKED SCI-FI YA NOVEL SET IN A SOCIALLY FRAGMENTED FUTURE SAN FRANCISCO

The world has descended into a morass of radioactivity and harsh climate shifts. The wealthy have escaped to rule from the protected Inworld; enormous, impenetrable domes that dominate urban skylines. Outworlders must live a life of serfdom catering to the Inworld, unless salvation can be won through prowess in Ket—a game of dangerous anti-gravity maneuvers and debilitating energy pulses.

This is the story of three lost Outworlders youths. Tristan is unmatched in his dedication to the games, Luisa is plagued by the memories of her family, and Michaelis has been cast aside by a corrupt system. Together, they need to find a way in, and Ket may hold the key.

…Like with 1984, The Hunger Games, and countless others, social commentary and plot are intrinsically woven together in Otto’s tale...the book becomes a propulsive procedural, running headfirst into scenes of tension building action, driving the two worlds together towards their inevitable climactic conflict...
